| Diet |
|
Alpacas
are ruminants. They chew cud like a deer or cow. Pasture grass,
low protein hay, and mineral supplements are their only dietary
requirements.
|
| Spitting |
|
Yes--at
each other when angered. Rarely do they spit at people.
|
| Easy
to maintain |
|
Small
and non-threatening. Require no extraordinary care. Require
basic 3-sided shelter in this area. Protection from heat is
most critical. They do not challenge fences, but do need protection
from predators like dog packs. Require routine worming and vaccinations.
|
| Shearing |
|
Once
each spring.
|
| Disposition |
|
Gentle.
They are very alert and curious animals, but generally keep
a respectful distance from newcomers.
|
| Transport |
|
Alpacas
are good travelers and appear to enjoy riding. We carry two
in the back of our covered short-bed pickup in cool weather.
