Diet   Alpacas are ruminants. They chew cud like a deer or cow. Pasture grass, low protein hay, and mineral supplements are their only dietary requirements.
Spitting   Yes--at each other when angered. Rarely do they spit at people.
Easy to maintain   Small and non-threatening. Require no extraordinary care. Require basic 3-sided shelter in this area. Protection from heat is most critical. They do not challenge fences, but do need protection from predators like dog packs. Require routine worming and vaccinations.
Shearing   Once each spring.
Disposition   Gentle. They are very alert and curious animals, but generally keep a respectful distance from newcomers.
Transport   Alpacas are good travelers and appear to enjoy riding. We carry two in the back of our covered short-bed pickup in cool weather.
