The Setting

Meet the Owners

Hal and Linda are in their fourteenth (and final, they hope!) home, following years of nomadic life during Hal’s military and aerospace career. After their two children were born, Linda completed her degree and worked as a librarian. Retirement has brought them to their full-time positions as alpaca farmers, a happy decision made over five years ago when they “discovered” alpacas. They’ve enjoyed “on-the-job” training plus benefits of advice from many wonderful, experienced alpaca owners. All the day-to-day care and maintenance for their 20 alpacas they do themselves, and really look forward each morning to walking to work! Please call or e-mail if you’re in this scenic part of the country; the Powells and their alpacas would love to see you!

There is another important staff member at Gemstone Farm. Many breeders have guard dogs or guard llamas to protect their alpacas from predators. Gemstone Farm has a guard horse.

Smokey, our Apppaloosa gelding, was a family pet along with Joker, a much older horse. They were the best of buddies and lived together for several years. They went to camp each summer where they provided training and pleasure to many children.

When Joker passed on, Smokey was left without a horse companion. Since then, Smokey has grown attached and protective of the alpacas. He chases dogs, deer and even bears from their pasture lands. Often he sleeps with his back against one side of the fence, while the alpacas sleep on the other side.

We consider Smokey a valuable member of the farm staff!

Our 24-Carat Guarantee

Gemstone Farm's alpacas sell with full reproductive guarantees. We will refund the purchase price of any alpaca we sell, less expenses, for the first 24 weeks after the sale. It's in our contract. Plus, we care about our alpacas' future, so we retain "right of first refusal" should a buyer elect to sell or trade during the 24-month period following the sale.
